Contest Fics: QueenOfTheCute

Angel is going to help with these, too. I just wrote this one first :P

Request: Fire Sage Shyu (appearance in Book One: Water, Chapter Eight: Avatar Roku)
Author's notes:
Inspiration was immediate. (And the more I read it, the more it fits.) Hope you enjoy!

It seemed every time he came by, the Avatar Aang became more of a statue.

He appeared a little taller, slightly more muscled, face increasingly hard. More stately, more imposing. Like the long line of reincarnations on the wall of the Fire Temple before him.

Shyu wondered exactly when the boy he met eight years ago had grown into this statue. More often, he wondered if it was a good thing, or something else entirely.

And perhaps it was this concern that brought him to where he was now, which not a place he was supposed to be at all. The punishments against him ranged from banishment to death, if he was caught by the right people. He could almost hear what his father would say to him for doing this.

But…things were getting out of control. The world was crumbling, and Aang remained a statue. He had to know, had to see for himself.

And so, when the Avatar arrived unannounced at the Temple, only issuing an apology for his sudden arrival and a request for use of Roku’s sanctuary, Shyu followed him. The mastered Avatar opened the door himself, so he could easily slip in behind him. Aang had asked for privacy that the other sages respected, so he didn’t know he’d been followed.

Once inside, he realized his grave mistake: the sanctuary offered no place to hide. He stood, plastered to the door, heart beating wildly as he watched Aang, sitting cross-legged in the center of the room.

A few minutes later, he relaxed slightly, and gained enough courage to step forward for a closer look. Aang’s eyes were closed, fists cemented together in his lap. He was apparently in a very deep trance. Shyu waved a hand in his face, and Aang only took another silent breath.

He sagged in relief, and the glanced around the room. No, no place to hide. Even the wall hangings stopped short a few feet from the floor.

Behind him, Aang took a louder breath. He felt his hands sweat as he stepped away as quickly and quietly as he could.

Finally, he had a rush of genius (and just in time). As the Avatar sighed and frowned, opening his eyes, Shyu wedged himself behind the last gold panel of Roku’s statue.

“Avatar Roku…I need your guidance…”

A flash of blue light, and a voice answered, echoing through the chamber.

“Aang, I cannot help. It was your decision.”

He crawled between the panel and the wall, robes catching on the rough metal. Inching forward, he chanced a look. There was Aang, still in position to mediate, but with a hard frown on his features.

And there, in front of him, was the ghostly blue form of Avatar Roku.

Two living statues.

“I know. I know that. But it was the only decision.”

Roku didn’t answer.

“I know what choice I made! I know the consequences!” his voice grew louder, more aggressive. “I know what I did! I know, okay?! I’m responsible, in the end! I’m responsible for Kyoshi!”

Shyu clamped a hand over his mouth.

“But it was the only decision. I couldn’t just…they were too dangerous. There was the Battle of Chin three years ago. And then the mess with their push for the islands in the Southern Chain, and the Southern Water Tribe dragged into it…” he shook his head. “And then last year, the secret conference, and the agent Zuko sent learned Suki was planning—“ he abruptly slammed his fist into the floor, glaring at the unmoving form of Roku. “I couldn’t let it happen! So much was going right; they would destroy all we’d worked for! I know what choice I made! And Sokka, I feel so damn awful, but too much depended on him! I couldn’t let it happen!

Roku finally spoke, in a low, solemn tone, “It was your decision. If it was for the good of the world, it was merely an act of balance. That alone is your highest responsibility, Aang. The other Avatars will tell you the same. We all, in our lifetimes, have to make hard choices.”

His blue form slowly began to fade, Aang glaring at him still. “Aang, I cannot help. I cannot help…with your guilt…

And then Roku was gone, and the Avatar had closed his eyes again, putting his head in his hands.

“I couldn’t let it happen…an act of balance…for the good of the world…”

Then, he stood up, and bowed before the statue before walking to the door. The metal creaked and groaned as the locks turned, and then Shyu was alone.

He realized everything he believed, everything his father had taught him, was untrue. The Avatar was a powerful being with a godly power, but at the core, he was merely a man.

And no divine intervention could change humanity’s nature to destroy itself.

Oh man, oh man, that's awesome! Poor, distraught, confused Aang!

I love how you made it exactly in keeping with the finale. That Roku (or the Avatar Spirit in general) does not reproach him for his actions. You really got across the... "slippery slope" of justified killing, if you will. Love it! You're totally rad. ;D

Awesome! I am dying for this story to start to open up more; for us to see more of what the world has been going through.

Oooh this is going to be so good.

Excellent! That's all I can really say.

Some more insight to the happenings of the world and what happened to Kyoshi Island.

Can't wait to read the next bit.

Amazing and chilling both at once. Your Aang is though provoking and a shiver-worthy counterpart to Canon!Aang; it's suddenly clear to me what a fine line he walks between sanity and...something else.

This has gotten me amazingly pumped up for the next chapter. I can't wait to read it. 8D

Also: I know feel strangely dirty using romantic, innocent icons when I comment on these posts. With Mai, Zuko, Katara, and Aang the way they are, it just feels WRONG. xD Maybe I should get some icons of them being...evil?
