Contest Fics: silly_izzy_me

Request: Jun (appearance in Book One: Water, Chapter Fifteen: Bato of the Water Tribe)
Author's notes:
So. Much. Fun.

Business was slow these days. Not that there weren't fugitives to chase; there were just too many chasers.

Of course, she didn't entirely mind. Sure, trampling across the country was exciting and interesting…when she was young. Now she only continued the family business in the hopes to gather enough gold so that she could live out her days not starving to death.

So she was open to the little business that came her way: the governor who had some thieves off with the family jewels, the farmer whose daughter took the elopement route, the pub owner who was tricked with a bad batch of liquor. Simple cases, simple journeys. After all, Nyla wasn't as young either. Some opportunities she had to pass.

"Let me get this straight," she frowned at the three men before her. "This nutcase has been prison-free for over two weeks, and you start looking for her now?" Their faces, hidden by black-swathed wide-brimmed hats, were impossible to read. "Beside that, you think she took a trade ship and you think she's in the Earth Kingdom."

The leader nodded. "That is what our investigations have led to." She waved her hand, cutting him off.

"Well then that's all the lead you'll have. Count me out."

The man's mouth settled into a hard frown, but she again interrupted him as he was about to speak.

"Nyla doesn't do water. Shirshus are for tracking, not swimming. And forget about putting either one of us on a ship. I'll be seasick as hell. Plus, your missing madwoman took a trade ship; by now her scent's all over the coastline."

"…Very well." The matching group gave her a simultaneous curt bow before sliding out of the pub the way they came. She heard the bartender chuckle behind her.

"I'd watch yourself for a while, Jun. The last thing anyone wants is Firelord Zuko on their case. It'll be the last thing they'll remember."

She snorted. "Oh please. I've dealt with Lord Zuko before, and it should be me on his case. As it stands, he still owes me for two previous employments. I'm not getting any younger, and that gold is just sitting pretty in the Royal Treasury."

Not to mention working for the government would give the Avatar's cronies a chance to see she wasn't exactly the example of a perfect citizen in the new world. She wanted to stay away from anything that would put her in debt to them.

She tried to appear uninterested, but her eyebrows had already shot up her forehead. "So…the General to the Earth King to Head the Earth Kingdom Armed Forces…some title you got there."

A dirt-caked hand simply reached for the glass before it. "What's with the formalities? Don't grovel, I'm not going to arrest you. I have a business opportunity for you, actually." The gold-brimmed hat tipped in her direction. "That is, if you're interested."

She smirked. "I see. This wouldn't be about a prison-breaker off on a sail around the world, would it? I shot that one down weeks ago."

"Prison-breaker? Those are rare, these days. Nah, I want to put some people in prison." The General's lip curled, either at the bitter taste of the drink or the bitter circumstances. "I take it you've heard of what happened in the Nanchu Forest."

She kept her voice neutral. It would be best not to turn the world's most feared earthbender against her. "I have. But I heard you, and you personally, took care of it weeks ago."

"I told you, stop groveling." The General grunted. "I did, or at least I thought I did. Then I learn the four bastards in charge are still running free." The empty glass clattered onto the table. "And that's where you come in."

The gold-rimmed band that covered the General's wrist flashed as it waved four soldiers into the pub. The glass was catapulted to the ground as a bag bigger than Jun's head dropped onto the table.

"Down payment."

She picked it up, with some effort. Taking a sample of the insides, Jun rolled the expertly shined coins in her fingers.

Moments later, they were all standing outside, as the soldiers held a small log under Nyla's nose.

"So, the one guy used this as a weapon?" MIght as well stay on the General's good side.

"You bet. Smart, too. Bending doesn't work on wood. They also found it enjoyable to sit in the trees and pick out my men with arrows, daggers, darts, and explosives. Spirits, it was the worst twelve days of my life."

She nodded, and sprinted to Nyla when her pet began snarling and sniffing wildly. The General took the cue and mounted an eel hound, and the soldiers did the same.

"Good girl," she crooned to Nyla, who was already galloping off, nose twitching. The General and the soldiers were close behind. She felt excited as the adrenaline rush took over. Her muscles would be sore for days after this, and Nyla would grumpy if they couldn't find a good resting spot, but for now she was back in the saddle again, and the reward would be worth it.

Jun glanced back at the General, whose face was set in a hard grin. Whoever these rebels were, she couldn't help but feel a little sorry. They had no idea what kind of punishment they were in for.

:O Oooooh! So much corruption, even Jun is wary of it. Intense.

And who be the general? Hmm...

A chapter and a request, how did I miss both. Either way very good.

Love the style and you did a wonderful job showing how most people are afraid of this new government.

Though your comment does make me very interested to see who this general is.

Could it be Jet perhaps?

Hm...General=Haru? That's all I can think of, and it didn't SEEM like him. But what I really want to know is the identity of the rebels. Who out there is still fighting?

But I'm guessing that it's Smellerbee, Longshot, Pipsqueak, and the Duke. It sounds like something they'd do.

I believe the General would be a certain, female Earthbender...amirite?

Or, wait, was she not with the gaang after all this.
